Legion of Mary

“Believe me, there is no more powerful means to obtain God’s grace than to employ the intercessions of the Holy Virgin.”

                                                          - St. Philip Neri

What is the Legion of Mary?

Begun in 1921 the Legion of Mary is now a world-wide apostolic organization of Catholic men and women who place themselves under the banner of Mary, Queen of the Legion. With the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit they strive to develop greater spirituality in their lives while practicing the spiritual works of mercy. Their purpose is for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

Who can join the Legion of Mary?

Membership is open to all Catholics who lead edifying lives and are animated by the Legion spirit or at least desire to foster that spirit in themselves and are willing to fulfill the required duties. A member must be at least 18 years old; however, junior groups for those between ages ten and eighteen exist under the direction of a senior Legionary.  Frank Duff, Founder of the Legion of Mary, describes the member as “Not special souls or unusual types, but ordinary Catholics living the everyday life of the world…”

Types of Membership

Active – Active members attend a weekly meeting, recite daily the required prayers and complete at least two hours of apostolate work.

Auxiliary – Auxiliary members are the praying wing of the Legion of Mary. They are those who are unable to attend the meetings and therefore offer prayers for the active works of the Legion.

The Consecration

The Consecration is a yearly prayer service where both the Active and Auxiliary members of the Legion of Mary rededicate themselves to the spirit of the Legion, which is accomplished by humbly offering all of their prayers, spiritual works of mercy and their entire being into the hands of Mary, who in turn offers them to Jesus. This ceremony is usually on or near March 25, the Annunciation of Our Lord.

"May the light of your faith dispel the darkness of my mind,”

they pray to Mary.

“May your continuous vision of God fill my memory with His presence.

May the burning love of your heart inflame the coldness of mine.

May I have no heart but yours to love God purely and ardently as you love Him.”
